The Rebel Yell offerings you often see today are more bottom shelf liquors. Some of which are Bourbon, Rye, American Whiskey, and even ginger, cherry, honey or root beer flavored Whiskey. However, the brand actually dates back to 1936 and its original mashbill was a wheated bourbon from the very famous Stitzel-Weller distillery.
For this particular Rebel Yell, a 10 year old single barrel, it is believed to be a wheated bourbon sourced from Heaven Hill. Is it Larceny? Old Fitzgerald? Only Luxco knows for sure.
The Rebel Yell 10 Year single barrel is limited to 2,000 cases in 2016, and 4,000 cases in 2017. I contacted Luxco to ask if this offering will extended past 2017. I have yet to receive a response.
Nose: Super heavy caramel. Chocolate. Peanut butter. Oak. Hay on the nose? I usually don’t give crazy notes, but I’m getting hay folks. hahaha
Palate: Same on the palate. Caramel. Chocolate covered peanuts. Vanilla. Old oak. If you have a sweet tooth, you will like this pour. Average mouthfeel, but a nice rounded whiskey. Very slight dryness on the back palate, but nothing that is displeasing or long.
Finish: Medium to long. Lot of chocolate and peanut that stays with you. Oak. Vanilla.
Grade: 90 – 92 (A-) = Excellent, Want to buy a case
The Rebel Yell 10 Year single barrel is one of my favorite bourbons of 2016 and it only cost me $45 per bottle. I know people in the bourbon community are questioning the hype this bottle is currently receiving. Is it getting good reviews just because it is “limited”? Or because it is just a wheated bourbon? Well, I’m here to say the hype is real folks. So much so, I put my money where my mouth is. After purchasing one bottle, I took it home and promptly opened it. Within 10 minutes of tasting it, I was driving back to the liquor store to buy a case. Putting aside that it tastes delicious, where else are you going to find a 10 year old wheated bourbon at 100 proof or higher? Old Rip Van Winkle? Pappy Van Winkle 15 year? Those hyper aged epic wheaters from Willett? Go get you some!Tags: bourbon blog, bourbon ranking, bourbon review, cleveland, Rebel Yell 10 Year Single Barrel Review, whiskey, Whiskey review
